COPS believes that the suggested modifications amount to nothing more than gerrymandering, and will only serve to delay the real reforms needed.

EQUAL PARENT'S WEEK

During EPW, purple ribbons will be tied to send the message, "The Best Parent Is Both Parents", and the further message that the right of children to have both parents involved in their lives, the right of both parents to function fully and equally as parents and share their rights and responsibilities equally, and the right of families to exist and function as a family, are all civil rights and human rights.  On Tuesday, September 25, at 8:30 p.m., public candlelight vigils and "Home Vigils" will be held throughout the world to join together in "A Moment in Our Hearts, A Moment of Solidarity" (NOT adjusted for other time zones, but means 8:30 pm in your time zone).  The EPW website can be found at http://members.tripod.com/epweek .  Also, please view the "Five Candles Reading" at http://members.tripod.com/epweek/candlevigil.html for use at public candlelight vigils and "Home Vigils."

Last year, people in 25 states throughout the United States and in six foreign countries joined to send the message of Equal Parents' Week throughout the world. Responses are being received confirming participation throughout the United States, England, Africa, and this number continues to grow!

Legislation The California State Legislature is back in session, and the anti-father bill on the front burner this week is SB 78, Premarital agreements by old nemesis Sheial Kuehl. This bill is a fine example of feminist jurisprudence, treating women like children and creating conflict with men. Read our analysis here and then contact your Senator

Update:  The bill has gone to the Governor. Please write asking for a veto.

Politics In Washington, sweeping changes are afoot as the new Administation takes hold and political appointments begin to change the face of Federal agencies.

In Sacramento, less-radical chairs head the key Judiciary Committess in both the Senate and the Assembly.

Culture   The buzz on families and fathers surrounds two new books:   Father and Child Reunion by Warren Farrell, and The Price of Motherhood  by Ann Crittenden.

Eminem, the voice of America's fatherless children, ignited controversy at the Grammys. To hear why, listen to Kill You from his award-winning Marshall Mathers   CD

Justice Clarence Thomas delivered a brave and inspirational speech to the American Enterprise Institute.

Media   Judge Leonard Edwards of San Jose admits the courts are biased against fathers in a bizarre editorial, and the San Francisco Chronicle straddles both sides of the fence on the economic status of mothers. The New York Times corrects its position on The War Against Boys by Christina Hoff Sommers.

Law   The Supreme Court refuses to hear a case on the accountability of bad prosecutors; Justice Thomas writes an elegant dissent.

COPS   The Coalition of Parent Support is a state-wide, California political organization  for those who believe that children do best when they have a healthy relationship  with both their mother and their father. We believe in joint custody and shared parenting after divorce, reasonable levels of child support, and individual  responsibity.

We combat media portrayals of fathers as deadbeats and abusers, and fight government to involved in families when it's neither  required nor constructive.

We sponsor and support legislation that advances our cause, and participate on panels and task forces at both the state and the local level that seek to support parent involvement in all aspects of children's lives, and we expect our members to support our mission by making their voices heard  in the halls of government. We also support the elected officials who stand  for justice and equality, and fight those who don't.
